The objective of JAM’s school improvement projects is to improve educational infrastructure in resource-poor settings, thereby creating a safe and stimulating environment for children in which to learn, play and grow. In Mozambique, for instance, access to water provision and agricultural training is also a priority. The scope of our school makeovers, or upgrades, is also dependent on the budget available for each project.
Teams from around the world take on the challenge and raise the funds for a designated upgrade, many months in advance. In planning with JAM’s Global Support Office team, participants are then accommodated at nearby facilities and travel to the school each day to complete the upgrade within seven to 10 days.
This also provides the hard-working volunteers with a chance to take in some of the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Those who come to work among rural communities, or in the informal settlements, say that the experience is the most rewarding adventure of their lives.
